When we respond to criticism (or any perceived attack) with emotion, rather than objectivity, the result, most likely, is the continuation of suffering. To end suffering we must take full responsibility for our own emotional lives.
When someone treats us unfairly, we dismiss them as an A&#hole or a B#tc& but never actually deal with why we became upset in the first place. We think, "They're wrong; the situation is wrong; what can I do? Nothing!" The responsibility for our feelings of suffering is given to someone or something, "out there," instead of where suffering actually originates and resides, which is inside each of us. This suffering remains within us only to be played out again and again in some malignant form that continues to cause you or others to suffer.
This unknown or unquestioned suffering may impact our lives and the lives of others slowly or dramatically - but it will always present itself in some useless or other harmful way until it is dealt with. The steps are a systematic approach to the discovery and elimination of all sources of internal suffering. By eliminating suffering from the body we can recover the happiness that is our core and natural state.
THE FORMATION OF THE FALSE SELF OR EGO
Unhappiness in life begins when we accept the false belief that the ego, our feelings and our "place in the world," are who we are. It is not. Our egos are a by-product of our birth - a learned mental system evolved to aid in the body's survival. You and I are not our minds or our egos. What YOU are is your awareness of this mental system, or rather, your awareness of being aware of this mental system. Understanding this distinction (between the ego and yourself) is the key factor in discovering lifelong happiness. It is an understanding that we have far more control, even absolute control, over all of our internal states (feelings & emotions).
As a child, we are dependent on others for survival - nature's way of ensuring that life sustaining knowledge and habits are transferred from parent to offspring. In childhood, our minds create a fabricated, internal mental system which it judges to be the best way to survive the childhood environment. In early childhood we quickly learned what behaviors, beliefs and opinions would keep us safe (or safest) and exhibited them. By using trial and error, we discovered what caused acceptance and safety, opposed to disapproval and real jeopardy, by the powers that be (our primary caregivers, siblings, other authority figures, etc.).
As we reached adolescence the practices of these beliefs and behaviors have been repeated thousands and thousands of times and are, literally, hardwired into our brains. They become the habits and patterns that form the main foundation of our core belief system; our own, unique model of reality - of how we believe and think things really (reality) are. But the mind is also malleable; it can be "re-wired" with conscious intervention.
THE STUBBORNNESS OF THE FALSE SELF OR EGO
For most of us, the core belief system that we developed so early in our lives remains, basically unchanged until our last breath. The internal entity that maintains this core belief system - that proposes the idea that actual reality matches our perceived reality - is often called the "ego" or "false self." The ego's goal is twofold, the first goal is to convince you that "it" is you and the second is to maintain the belief that your perception of reality is unflawed and "just fine." The ego convinces you that it knows what you need to know to remain safe in an unpredictable world.
It is common to argue that "people don't really change!" This is true as most people don't change. The ego and its core belief system is so recognized as our identity, as who we really are, that to change, fundamentally, would be like ripping an arm off.
Typically, fundamental change only occurs in deep crisis, when the ego and it's way of thinking and behaving in the world has become so defeated it just "gives up" and true transformation is allowed to occur. A new, more modern and serving core belief system is created. But even this new ego is not you. You are the awareness, the observer of all of this going on.
With the steps you need not wait for deep crisis to occur. You can, in this moment, change old, self-defeating core habits and patterns that belonged to a much younger you. A you who existed in very different circumstances and consciously develop a healthier and happier mind and body.
PROBLEMS OF THE FALSE SELF OR EGO
Problems arise when we accept our egos as who we really are. Consider Sam, an emotionally and physically abused child, who becomes career successful, attracts his "soul mate" and is generally perceived by most as "having it all." His ego has created a "perfect life," despite a damaging core belief system. Then something goes wrong, the market crashes, the soul mate is unfaithful, whatever. The created ego, so desperate to maintain the status quo of Sam's "perfect life" and identity, engages in unethical behavior. At thirty-five, Sam commits suicide days before going on trial for embezzlement.
The persona that Sam's ego had created to greet the world was the opposite of his core belief system which never dealt with the emotional and physical abuse he suffered in childhood. When exterior forces threatened to destroy the egos invented persona, the core belief system responded with thinking and behavior that was risky and illegal. Deep down, at Sam's unconscious core was his ever-lingering and dominating belief that he remained a valueless and helpless child - regardless of all his later achievements. When crisis struck, Sam's seemingly rational mind responded, almost predictably. In essence, he created an actual reality that matched his own, unconsciously perceived one.
Had Sam's core belief system been built on the foundations of worthiness and empowerment, he would have weathered this crisis and most likely emerged from it a better and wiser person. But being unaware of what was really the driver of his thoughts and behavior he became another pointless fatality. All suffering we inflict on ourselves and others is a result of malignant, internal wounds and false beliefs not yet challenged in the core belief system.
Despite all of our appearances, our sophistication, life experience, education and accomplishments, we, as adults, remain large versions of our childhood selves. If we've never challenged our initial core belief system - it's still there! Still wildly influencing our conscious and unconscious behavior. We benefit from being honest with ourselves and (really) knowing "why we are the way we are?" Why we believe what we believe, fear what we fear, crave what we crave and judge what we judge. The reason of, "because it's always been that way," is not the answer of a truly free thinking and independent person. It is the answer of an oblivious, dependent and irresponsible one.
History and prisons are filled with millions and millions of tragic figures: despots, abusers, addicts, thieves, murderers and all of their compliant victims who have accepted the false belief that their egos are who they really are; and that to fail the ego meant to fail as a person. But as fully self-aware and independent persons we know there is another way. We do have a choice of becoming who we are really meant to be despite the colossal resistance of the ego. The steps will show the way.
USING THE THREE STEPS TO DISCOVER LIFE PURPOSE
We all have dreams and fantasies but are you aware of your purpose? Your purpose is not your dreams or your fantasies. Dreams and fantasies are what we have been chasing with the hope that they will make us happy. If you release the seemingly compulsive need to spend your time, resources and thinking on dreams and fantasies that have no value or are completely ego based, you can fully engage in your life purpose with full vigor.
By using the steps it is easy to discover your purpose. Use them to release all of the internal AND external pressures you feel for dreams and fantasies to come about. Do not fear. By releasing all of these pressures you will inadvertently reveal your purpose. It will be the one or many things that leave you feeling horrified to not accomplish before your passing. You may still have dreams and fantasies. But they will be seen and acted on as the trivial pursuits they really are. If they happen, great. If they don't, whatever. Either way, you're happy.
A continued compulsion to engage in dreams and fantasies that do not serve your best interests, that serve only the ego, or cause you or others to suffer, are tell-tale signs that destructive and unhealthy core beliefs still exist within you. As such, you will always exist in a state of suffering. Take appropriate action.
Lifelong happiness comes by knowing you are on the right path and living and breathing truth and purpose - to know you are serving truth and purpose. Everything else complicates life, causing unnecessary stress and suffering. Choose wisdom and happiness over deceit, triviality, delusion and self-hatred.
SEEKING HAPPINESS IN EXTERNAL SOURCES LIKE PEOPLE AND STUFF
All external sources change (fortunes reverse, the mighty fall, the guilty are punished, etc.). As such, we will never be free of suffering when we seek happiness from an external source. Even if we could achieve every external success we could imagine, we would still live in a state of worry over maintaining or losing it. To seek happiness in external things is to know we are living co-dependently. We become reliant on something "out there" to be happy - to complete us, to validate us, to elevate us. But everything "out there" changes, and forever will. Any happiness, found in external sources, will be fleeting, at best.
True happiness just is. It is "I am happy" and not, "I am happy when...!" True happiness is like true love. It is a natural state of being. True love is not dependent of something outside of ourselves. It is not, "I love you because you love me" or "when you love me you will complete me!" Both signs of co-dependency. True love is "I love you because 'I am loving' and what you feel (about me) is not relevant." Likewise, true happiness is "I am happy because 'I am happy' and what you feel (about me) is not relevant."
The great news is that our compulsive needs, thoughts and behaviors - the habits and patterns we exhibit in our search for happiness "out there," are the useful sources for discovering what we are suffering from, "in here" (pointing to heart).
THE KEY TO HAPPINESS IS ONE STEP AT A TIME
